The name appears for the first time in the diploma of the eleventh of June 983, by which the emperor Otto II granted the castle to the patriarch of Aquileia. The patriarchs then gave it in fief to a consortium of noble families and set a gastaldo to administer justice over a district that included, besides Fagagna, seventeen other villages. Around the castle stood five small boroughs which, towards the end of the fourteenth century, together with the castle gave rise to the Community of Fagagna, governed by a council of twelve: four nobles from the castle and eight commoners. Fagagna gave itself up to Venice in 1420, the castle lost all military use and the patriarch's palace fell into ruin; and with its stones, carried down the hill, they built the palace of the Community, finished in the early fifteen hundreds, with a loggia on the ground floor and above it a three-light window surmounted by the lion of Saint Mark. Of the three gates of the borough only one is left, the one they call the Synagogue gate.

At Villa Volpe, where the supreme command of the Italian army sat until June, the declaration of war on Austria-Hungary was signed on the twenty-fourth of May 1915; two plaques, set up at different times, record it. Four centuries earlier, in 1511, during the peasant revolt that went down in history as the cruel fat Thursday, the nearby castle of Villalta was stormed and half destroyed: a few days later a violent earthquake destroyed the little that had survived. The small church of San Leonardo, deconsecrated by the Napoleonic suppressions, was used as a hay store until a few decades ago and is now restored. In the Quadris oasis, opened in 1989, the white stork has been reintroduced. And since 1891 the village fair has opened with a donkey race, on the first Sunday of September.
