Forni di Sopra

Province: Udine · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,027 · Postal code: 33024

The document of 778 that is supposed to be the first record of Forni di Sopra in fact concerns Forni Avoltri, where they were digging on Monte Avanza: the date ended up here by mistake and is still written all over the place. The village belonged to the Savorgnan, who received it from the patriarchs of Aquileia, and from them the valley was called that of the Forni Savorgnani.

The main settlement is made of two villages that grew into each other, Vico and Cella, plus Andrazza a kilometre further on. To the south begins the park of the Friulian Dolomites, one of the few protected areas in Europe with neither houses nor roads inside it. The Varmost pistes start at two thousand one hundred metres, the highest in the region, and many people here work for the spectacle factories of the Cadore.
