Feast of Saint Lawrence
📅 Every year, on 10 August
On 10 August Forni Avoltri, a municipality of 642 inhabitants in the province of Udine, celebrates its patron San Lorenzo (Saint Lawrence) with a bonfire on Monte Tuglia and fireworks.
Forni Avoltri is the northernmost comune of the Gorto district, in the upper Degano valley, and its name is wholly industrial: the forni are the furnaces where ore from Monte Avanza was smelted, and Avoltri comes from ab ultra, that is beyond the water of the Degano, where the houses of those who worked there stood. The arms say the same thing: three furnaces in a row, surmounted by two crossed hammers.
A document of 778, by which the count of Friuli Massellione granted a mountain village called Furno, expressly conceded the right to exploit everything belonging to it, iron and copper included: which is why scholars assign it to Forni Avoltri and not to Forni di Sopra, which has no deposits at all. The first certain evidence of the mines dates from 1328, when the patriarch of Aquileia authorised a certain Nascimbene to reopen the workings and a furnace that had already been running in ancient times. In November 1966 a flood devastated the village and killed seven people engaged in the rescue, among them the mayor Riccardo Romanin and three young men of nineteen; the following year the new middle school was opened, paid for by a subscription raised in Como and named after the victims.
