Villa Santina

Province: Udine · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 2,222 · Postal code: 33029

On the rock faces above the village, when it rains hard, a waterfall two hundred and thirty metres high appears: it is called Radime, but here they call it Farine dal Diaul, the devil's flour, after a local legend. The village used to be called Villa di Invillino and was a hamlet; it took its present name in 1867, from the Col Santino at whose foot it stands.

At Villa Santina they weave linen with flowers on it, carpets and tapestries, and they make frico. The old railway station is a double piece of memory: there, in 1952, some scenes of Penne nere were shot, the film with Marcello Mastroianni. The earthquake of 1976 caused huge collapses and many deaths here; the village got back on its feet.
