Feast of Saint George
📅 Every year, on 23 April
On 23 April Preone, a municipality of 266 inhabitants in the province of Udine, celebrates its patron Saint George, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
In the Seazza torrent, above the village, fossils of shrimps, fish, plants and small reptiles have been found, and among them one of the oldest pterosaurs ever discovered: it bears the name of the place, Preondactylus. The collection is housed in the eighteenth-century Palazzo Lupieri, in an exhibition named after 200 million years ago; and that family, it is thought, had made its fortune selling beech trunks to the Venetian Republic, which turned them into oars for its galleys.
The surname Lupieri too is said to have been born here, at the end of the sixteenth century, through a slip of the language: people said «'l frut de lu Pieri», Piero's boy, and the article ended up fusing with the name — Lupieri. From Preone the surname spread through the whole of Carnia and then Friuli. The municipality was abolished in 1928 and attached to Enemonzo; it became autonomous again in 1946.
