Enemonzo

Province: Udine · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,351 · Postal code: 33020

The village lies where the Degano runs into the Tagliamento, and its name is first read around the year one thousand, as Enemum. It belonged to the patriarchate of Aquileia until 1420, then to Venice, and in 1797, by the treaty of Campoformio, it passed to the Austrians together with the whole of Friuli.

Both wars were seen at close quarters: in 1917, after Caporetto, many people left their houses and fled beyond the Piave; in the second, with all of Carnia, Enemonzo was occupied by the Cossacks, who left only in May 1945. Above the meeting of the two rivers stands the little church of San Rocco, and near Maiaso a cave they call the Pagans' cave.
