Monte San Giovanni in Sabina

Province: Rieti · Region: Lazio · Population: 752 · Postal code: 02040

On Good Friday 1944, in the hamlet of San Michele Arcangelo del Tancia, a German detachment led by the prefect of Rieti burned houses and livestock and gathered in the chapel those who had stayed: women, old people and children, since the men had gone away. In the afternoon they took them outside and killed them: fifteen people, among them four mothers, six children and a man of eighty-four.

The dead were even denied burial: the survivors carried them back into the chapel at night, in secret. The village, of medieval origin, belonged for a long time to the Orsini of Monterotondo and then passed to the Apostolic Chamber; of the castle, which was round, a small tower and the square keep remain: the rest was pulled down after the plague of 1650 and an earthquake of the early eighteenth century.
