Monterotondo

Province: Rome · Region: Lazio · Population: 39,502 · Postal code: 00015

On the hills of the Roman Sabina, Monterotondo was a fief of the Orsini and then the Barberini: the ducal palace, now town hall, and the cathedral of Santa Maria Maddalena preside over a historic centre overlooking the Tiber valley. The town holds the silver medal for military valour for its people's resistance in October 1943, when fighting here was fierce.

Garibaldi entered in 1867 during the Agro Romano campaign: Risorgimento memory is at home. Today Monterotondo hinges Rome — half an hour by train — and the olive-grove Sabina, with the Nazzano Tevere-Farfa reserve close by.
