The last born of the new towns — inaugurated on 29 October 1939 — Pomezia keeps in the core of piazza Indipendenza its original rationalist plan, with a civic tower and the church of San Benedetto. Its first inhabitants were brought from far away: poor farmers from Romagna, Veneto and Friuli, moved onto land that had just been reclaimed.
Myth, though, lived here long before: at Pratica di Mare stood Lavinium, the city Aeneas is said to have founded when he landed in Latium, and the medieval village with its archaeological area can be visited; next to it lies the air force base. The name itself comes from a Latin city, Suessa Pometia, though nobody knows where it stood. Peace did not last: Pomezia was heavily bombed during the battle of Anzio. Today it is one of the most active industrial and pharmaceutical hubs in Lazio, with the sea at Torvaianica ten minutes away: thirteen kilometres of free beaches where Romans escape at weekends.
