The last-born of the foundation towns — inaugurated in 1939 — Pomezia keeps its original rationalist core around Piazza Indipendenza, civic tower and church of San Benedetto included. Myth, however, lived here first: at Pratica di Mare stood Lavinium, the city Aeneas was said to have founded on landing in Lazio, and the medieval hamlet with its archaeological area can be visited.
Today Pomezia is one of Lazio's busiest industrial and pharmaceutical hubs, with the sea of Torvaianica ten minutes away: thirteen kilometres of free beaches where Romans escape at weekends. Rome and Castel Gandolfo are half an hour off.
