The patron saint of Pomezia is Saint Benedict of Nursia, celebrated on 11 July in the church of San Benedetto Abate, located in the town's founding nucleus; Piazza San Benedetto da Norcia, also known as Piazza del Mercato, still today holds the Monument to the Fallen of Nasiriyah.
Pomezia was designed along simple lines and with a preference for Italian building materials, avoiding iron and reinforced-concrete structures where possible, as part of the reclamation of the Pontine Marshes in the 1930s. The municipal territory, however, holds a much older history: starting in 1957, an archaeological campaign by Rome's Sapienza University brought to light the ancient site of Lavinium, with the Sanctuary of the Thirteen Altars, the town's walls and a gate, the baths and the Heroon of Aeneas, a burial mound from the 7th century BC that tradition would identify with the tomb of the Trojan hero, legendary founder of the first city of Latium after fleeing Troy. The finds are today kept in the Lavinium Archaeological Museum, opened in 2005 with the exhibition «Hic domus Aeneae».
