The patron of Bagnoregio is Saint Bonaventure, celebrated on 15 July in the Church of San Bonaventura.
It is thought that the night-time Good Friday procession began in Civita in the mid-1600s, later moving to Bagnoregio for lack of performers: today over 300 costumed performers parade, in an atmosphere of quiet recollection. During the Christmas season, Civita di Bagnoregio turns into a small Bethlehem for the Living Nativity, involving every local resident on 26 December and 1 and 6 January. The town also holds the famous Civita di Bagnoregio and Porta Santa Maria.
