Sestri Levante used to be an island. The floods of the Gromolo and the sea built a sandy isthmus that attached it to the mainland, and the old town sits on that isthmus, with a bay on either side.
The two bays have storybook names: to the west the Baia delle Favole, the bay of fables, said to be named after Hans Christian Andersen, who spent some time here in 1833; to the east the smaller Baia del Silenzio, the bay of silence. On the table there is bagnun, fresh anchovy soup. There are 18,172 residents.

Sestri Levante celebrates Saint Nicholas on 6 December; the town is known for the Andersen Festival and for the Tigullio Rowing Palio, in which seven towns of the gulf compete every year, between May and August, in traditional Ligurian gozzo boat races.
