Rossiglione

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 2,932 · Postal code: 16010

Rossiglione is two villages. The upper one, once called Villafranca, stands on the right bank of the Stura; the lower one a kilometre downstream, on the other side. The statutes of around 1300 show them almost independent of one another: eight local families governing the lower village, six men the upper one.

The name first appears in a deed of 8 January 1186, granting land to the people of Rossiglione, and perhaps already in 1146. The fief belonged to Monferrato and to the Del Bosco marquises, who handed it to Genoa in 1210. This is the Stura valley, inside the Beigua park. The population is 2,932.
