Campo Ligure

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 3,045 · Postal code: 16013

Campo Ligure did not want to belong to Genoa. An imperial fief set inside Genoese territory, in 1600 it was invaded, sacked and burned by the Corsican mercenaries the Republic had sent on behalf of the Spinola, and its men were banished for thirty-six years; in 1721 the inhabitants turned to Vienna and obtained from Charles VI the confirmation of their privileges; in 1814 they raised the imperial eagle again rather than recognise the restored republic.

The name dates from 1884: before that it was Campo Freddo. That same year the first filigree workshop opened, and within a few years the village became Italy's centre for that thread of gold and silver bent by hand with pliers. It is now one of the country's most beautiful villages. The population is 3,045.
