Tiglieto

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 580 · Postal code: 16010

In 1120 the Cistercians built the abbey of Santa Maria alla Croce here: it was the first Cistercian monastery founded in Italy, and from here the monks set out who went on to found Staffarda and Casanova. For eight centuries the abbey was the main settlement of the municipality.

The name comes from the lime tree, which together with the oak filled the woods of the valley floor and is now rare in these parts. On 12 July 1583 the soldiers of the duke of Mantua invaded the territory to set up customs posts: it took three days of fighting before the Genoese drove them out and freed the abbey. The population is 580.
