Masone

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 3,758 · Postal code: 16010

There was nobody here until the year 1000. Then came a Benedictine monastery, Santa Maria di Vesolla, where pilgrims heading for the port of Genoa on their way to Rome or the Holy Land would stop; and then the Del Bosco marquises put up a mansio, like the imperial posting stations.

Inside the mansio were armed men with three jobs: to garrison the place, to help travellers and to collect the toll. In 1183 the Del Bosco invested some vassals from Ovada with the fief of Castro Mansioni. At the end of the thirteenth century Genoa drove the Del Bosco out by force, and Masone became a fief of the Republic: the woods and the streams were wanted for ironworking. There are 3,758 residents.
