Urbe

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 769 · Postal code: 17048

From the eighth century these woods were the Selva dell'Orba, a hunting ground of the Lombard kings. The name of the place appears as Urbs and Urba in two imperial diplomas, of 981 and 1002; the municipality as it is today, though, was only put together in 1929.

What is particular here is the snow: the sea is some ten kilometres away as the crow flies, but the Beigua range stops the damp winds and lets in the cold air of the Po plain. On the valley floor, at five hundred metres, an average of a metre and eighty falls each year; higher up, as much as three metres. The population is 769.
