Castel Vittorio

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 329 · Postal code: 18030

This village has changed its name twice: it was Castrum Dodi, then Castel Dho; when it passed to Genoa in 1261 it was renamed Castelfranco, and in 1862, in honour of the king, it became Castel Vittorio. With neighbouring Pigna it was war for centuries: in the eighteenth century the people of Pigna carried off the bells of the parish church, and from here they went to take up the paving stones of Pigna's square.

On 3 December 1944 the Germans, with the Black Brigade of Imperia, shot nineteen civilians on monte Gordale for the help they had given the partisans; two days later they shot two more in the village square. The population is 329.
