Isolabona

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 678 · Postal code: 18035

The name says two things: insula, because the village sits on a sort of islet between the Nervia and the Merdanzo, and bona, for the mild climate and for the way people passing through were treated. You go in over a late-medieval bridge of a single arch with a little shrine in the middle; in the first square there is an octagonal fountain of 1486.

Above the village stands the Doria castle, hexagonal, in sandstone, with a square tower full of loopholes. The earthquake of 1887 ruined it and restoration began only in 1989; today an international harp festival is held there in summer. The population is 678.
