Pigna

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 894 · Postal code: 18037

In 1727 some men of Pigna went over to Castel Vittorio and carried off its bells: they are still in the fifty-six-metre tower beside the church. The people of Castel Vittorio took revenge by stealing the paving stones from Pigna's square.

Much later, on 29 August 1944, the Free Republic of Pigna in Val Nervia was proclaimed here: its own democratic institutions and wide popular participation, defended by the Garibaldi formations of Guglielmo Vittorio, 'Vitò'. It lasted until 8 October, after four days of fighting. The population is 894.
