Bajardo

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 312 · Postal code: 18031

On 23 February 1887 the earthquake of the western Riviera brought down the roof of the parish church of San Nicolò: at Bajardo two hundred and twenty people died out of about seventeen hundred inhabitants, the highest toll of any municipality struck in the province.

That collapse, however, brought to light something nobody knew: under the church stood the columns of a pagan temple, with capitals carved by the stonecutters of Cenova. Bajardo lies at nine hundred and ten metres and is the highest municipality in the province of Imperia; over the centuries it had sent Genoa the timber for its galleys. The population is 312.

Saint Nicholas, patron whose ancient church concealed a Roman temple

📅 Every year, on 6 December

Bajardo celebrates Saint Nicholas on 6 December; the earthquake of 23 February 1887 brought down the roof of the old parish church, killing 216 people, but also revealed columns and the remains of a Roman temple on which the church had been built.
