Apricale

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 625 · Postal code: 18035

The statutes Apricale gave itself in 1267 are the oldest in Liguria, and they were not gentle: a murderer was buried alive with his victim, cattle thieves lost a hand or a foot, and a man accused could prove his innocence by walking a short way holding a red-hot iron without burning himself.

The bell tower of the parish church is the old square tower of the castle of the Lucertola, which the counts of Ventimiglia built in the tenth century on the rock spur above the square. On its top, since 2000, there is a bicycle pointing upwards: it is called La forza della non gravità, and it is by Sergio Bianco. The population is 625.

Saint Anthony the Abbot beside the cemetery

📅 Every year, on 8 September

On 8 September Apricale celebrates Saint Anthony the Abbot in the 13th-century church dedicated to him, built on the remains of an ancient temple; the main parish, however, has the castle's bell tower.
