Perinaldo

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 912 · Postal code: 18032

In a village of nine hundred people Giovanni Domenico Cassini was born, the astronomer who gave his name to the division between Saturn's rings and ended up running the Paris observatory. In 1672 he sent the parish church a painting as a gift, and today there is an astronomical observatory above the village.

The village sits on a narrow ridge between two valleys and takes its name from Podium Rainaldi, the hill of Rinaldo, a count of Ventimiglia around the year one thousand. In 1640 Franciscan friars settled here and changed the hills for good: they replaced the wild olive with the taggiasca variety, which is still the one grown. The population is 912.

Saint Nicholas, patron, and an astronomer's gift to his home church

📅 Every year, on 6 December

Perinaldo celebrates Saint Nicholas on 6 December, in the parish church of San Nicola da Bari, built over an earlier 11th-century structure, which preserves a painting donated in 1672 by the Perinaldo-born astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini.
