Andora

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 7,470 · Postal code: 17051

Andora and Stellanello, the two neighbouring towns, carry the names of two young people who died. So the legend says: the Saracen prince Al Kadir saw Andalora, «golden land», during a raid and carried her off, tied to the mainmast.

Stefanello, her betrothed, reached the ship by night at Capo Mele, but was discovered and killed; Andalora threw herself into the sea rather than stay in Saracen hands, and the sacrifice of the two, again according to the legend, converted Al Kadir. The real history is drier: the castrum Andoræ was a Roman holding, then belonged to the Benedictines of the Gallinara and to the marquises of Clavesana, and in 1252 it was sold to Genoa. There are 7,470 residents.
