Cesio

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 286 · Postal code: 18022

The name, they say, comes from chickpeas: in dialect the village is Cexi, and before the olive took everything over the chickpea was the commonest crop in these parts.

At Arzeno d'Oneglia there is something you rarely see: the stone bell tower of the parish church is pierced by the lane, which passes underneath it to link piazza del Popolo with the church square. The village has seen worse: in 1801, after the Napoleonic battles, some five hundred marauders came down from the neighbouring valleys and put it to fire and sword. The population is 286.
