Borgomaro

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 873 · Postal code: 18021

The name comes from Burgum Macri, the new village that grew in the fifteenth century at the foot of the castle of the counts of Ventimiglia. In 1455 count Gaspare sold the whole valley of the Maro to the Lascaris of Tenda for 8,600 Genoese lire: an entire fief, with its churches and its pastures, changing hands by a deed signed at Tenda.

In 1625, in the war between Savoy and Genoa, the villagers too shut themselves in the castle: it fell after a few days and eighty Savoy soldiers were captured with their commander. The village you see today owes much to the earthquake of 1887, which took no lives here but rebuilt the houses. The population is 873.
