Caravonica

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 303 · Postal code: 18020

The name may come from the caravans that passed this way on the via Marenca, climbing from the coast to the pass of San Bartolomeo and on into Piedmont. But peasant tradition gives another version: cara vox Nice, the dear voice of Nice, a girl who sang among the pastures and the woods.

In June 1706 the village housed for four days Anne Marie of Orléans, wife of Victor Amadeus II, fleeing Turin under French siege with her children and — so it seems — with the Holy Shroud. She stayed in the palace they still call the Countess's here. The population is 303.
