Chiusanico

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 603 · Postal code: 18027

On 30 January 1298, in the church of Santa Maria in Fontibus at Albenga, bishop Nicolò Vaschino sold his feudal rights over Chiusanico and the whole valley of Oneglia to the brothers Nicolò and Federico Doria for ten thousand Genoese lire. That is how the Doria came into this valley, and they stayed for two centuries.

The village is made of three pieces: Castello, the oldest, high on the ridge, which was the seat of the castellany of Montarosio; Villa, where the parish church and the town hall are; and Gerini, further down. Among the olive groves, near Castello, stands the old pieve of San Lorenzo, mother church of the whole district. The population is 603.
