Dolceacqua

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 1,990 · Postal code: 18035

At the beginning of 1884 Claude Monet came through and set to painting the castle and the bridge. The bridge is the one joining the two halves of the village: on one side the Terra, the old core beneath the castle, on the other the Borgo, born in the fifteenth century; linking them took a single arch of thirty-three metres.

The castle belonged to the Doria, who bought Dolceacqua between 1270 and 1276; on 27 July 1744 French and Spanish troops partly destroyed it. In the valley the taggiasca olive and the Rossese wine had been brought by the Benedictines, who kept a monastery here. The population is 1,990.
