Soldano

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 985 · Postal code: 18036

From the sea Soldano cannot be seen: you notice it only once you are inside it. It was built that way on purpose, with fortified gates and the ravines of the Verbone for defence, by people fleeing the Saracen raids on the coast.

The name, they say, comes from sultan: one theory has the village peopled by prisoners brought here from Ventimiglia after the wars in Spain. In the mid-eighteenth century Gio. Bartolomeo Soldano left the parish land and houses on condition that the priest say thirty sung masses for his soul and teach the boys to read, write and do a little arithmetic. The population is 985.
