The patrons of Pompeiana are Saint Mary Magdalene, celebrated on 22 July in the oratory dedicated to her in the main town, and Our Lady of the Assumption, celebrated on 15 August in the parish church whose first architectural layout may date from the 11th century, in the Romanesque style: the present interior structure was redone during the 17th century in the Baroque style, while the facade and adjoining bell tower were built in the early 18th and early 19th centuries respectively.
The official act splitting the upper and lower zones of the town was signed precisely in the square of the parish church, and allowed the inhabitants of the lower zone to freely attend religious functions. In 1472 rights over the territory, then called Pompiana Maior, passed to the Spinola marquises of the San Luca branch, who governed it on behalf of the Republic of Genoa; in 1673, after a long legal dispute between the Grillo and Gentile families, who had previously held its rights, the matter was resolved.
