Seborga

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 323 · Postal code: 18012

On Christmas Eve 1666 the commendatory abbot of Seborga leased out a mint: for five years imitations of the French petit louis were struck there, with St Benedict on the obverse. The duke of Savoy banned them from circulation as early as 1667 and the bishop of Nice branded them fraudulent.

From that mint comes the name of today's coin, the luigino, which the 'Principality of Seborga' has struck since the nineteen-sixties: it has no legal value and is spent as a voucher in the village. The inhabitants also elect a prince — since 2019 Nina Menegatto, the first woman — even though historical research has shown that the 1729 deed of sale to the Savoy state exists and is registered. The population is 323.

Saint Martin, patron of a village where ancient monks once minted coins

📅 Every year, on 11 November

Seborga celebrates Saint Martin of Tours on 11 November, in the church founded in the first half of the 17th century; facing it stands the palace of the Lérins monks, once seat of the local mint, today also recalled by the curious story of the «Principality of Seborga».
