There exists a copy of a deed dated 954: count Guido of Ventimiglia, setting out for Spain to fight the Saracens, gives Seborga and Vallebona to the Benedictines of Lérins. The trouble is that the document names people and titles that did not exist in 954.
Forgery or not, it worked: in 1177 the bishop and the consuls of Ventimiglia recognised the donation, on the strength of the seal and the testimony of twelve local worthies. The name comes from vallis bona, the good valley, and the terraces around the village are planted with mimosa, broom, olives and vines. The population is 1,332.
