On 23 March 2026 the inhabitants voted to change the name of their comune: 1,509 yes against 1,284 no, 55%, to add «al mare» and be called Vallecrosia al mare. A choice of tourist identity, declared as such.
The old name says the opposite: the people had left the sea. The valley was called Vallis Vervonis, from the verbena sacred to the Romans that still grows here and that also names the Verbone torrent; then the Saracen raids pushed the population to withdraw inland, into that «short and narrow valley», valle Crosa, the only one in the area closed at its head by the Poggio di Perinaldo. There are 7,032 residents.
