The patron saint of Bolano is Saint Joseph, celebrated on 19 March. The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, an old pieve located in the old village, was enlarged and rebuilt in Baroque style at the end of the 18th century over the remains of an earlier Romanesque-Gothic building: the latter was first named in 1149 in the bull of Pope Eugenius III, which listed the thirty-three pievi of Luni. The interior frescoes are the work of the painter David Beghè.
In the hamlet of Ceparana stands the Giustiniani castle, a building that, through various interventions over the centuries, was transformed from a Benedictine abbey into a noble residence: already cited in the 963 charter of Emperor Otto I, the site was further fortified in the 11th century by the bishops of Luni, owners of the village. Ownership of the palace passed in 1717 to the Giustiniani family, who transformed it into a lordly residence; next to the castle stands the family's private chapel, built in the course of the 18th century and dedicated to the Santissima Annunziata, which holds a marble altarpiece depicting the Annunciation. The town's first demographic data were provided by Monsignor Agostino Giustiniani, according to whom in the early decades of the 16th century Bolano had three hundred and ten «foghi», or family hearths.
