On 30 March 1569 the Instrumento della Cumpagnia was signed at Bonassola: it is the first Italian document setting up a kind of common fund, and it served one purpose only, to ransom villagers carried off by pirates. Here the sea gave and took.
In 1943 it could still be seen from the beach: on 29 June a British submarine torpedoed the steamer Bolzaneto offshore, breaking it in two. The people of Bonassola went out in their fishing boats and pulled out nine men from a crew of twenty. The village sits in a bay closed by hills of pines, olives and vines. The population is 995.
