For centuries people here lived with their backs to the sea: they fished by day and went back inland in the evening, under the shelter of the two sixteenth-century towers built against the corsairs. The round one, near the beach, lost half of itself in the flood of 1852 and has been a stump ever since.
The seaside town was born late, and by a railway accident: in 1932 the line and the station were moved a kilometre further inland, and the seafront was left free. The present name dates from 1949; before that it was simply Deiva. The population is 1,438.
