Framura

Province: La Spezia · Region: Liguria · Population: 683 · Postal code: 19014

The bell tower of the church of San Martino, at Costa, is a Carolingian keep of the ninth century: they reused it just as it was. The municipality has no single centre — Anzo, Setta, Ravecca, Costa and Castagnola lie scattered from the sea up the hill — and against the Turks it defended itself with three watchtowers.

In 1944 two American teams of fifteen men, the Ginny missions, landed here to blow up the railway tunnel between Framura and Bonassola. Both failed, and the soldiers of the second were shot by the Germans and buried in a mass grave. Today a cycle path runs along that old railway line. The population is 683.
