Bardineto

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 697 · Postal code: 17057

In 775 Charlemagne's army took the village and gave it to the monks of San Pietro in Varatella. It was they who started the trade that kept the valley going for centuries: the iron came in rough from the quarries of Elba and was worked in the forges along the Bormida.

Underneath, the mountain is hollow: the limestone and dolomite are pierced by nearly eighty caves, which here are called buranche. The one at Bardineto has more than two kilometres of tunnels. Above, the Romanesque church of San Nicolò keeps fifteenth-century frescoes and has been a national monument since 1906. The population is 697.

Saint Roch and the sixteen-sided castle

📅 Every year, on 16 August

Bardineto celebrates Saint Roch on 16 August; the town holds the remains of a 7th-century Lombard castrum and of a 13th-century sixteen-sided castle possibly built on its foundations.
