Bormida

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 401 · Postal code: 17045

The valley-floor road, opened in 1666, is called the 'queen's road': it was built for the passage of Margaret Theresa of Spain, on her way to Vienna to join her husband, the emperor Leopold I, and it linked the port of Finale to Milan. When Genoa bought the marquisate, it let the road fall to pieces.

With woods covering about four fifths of its territory, Bormida is the most wooded municipality in Liguria; and since its people are few, in 2017 the mayor proposed giving two thousand euros and very low rents to anyone who would come and live there: the news went round the world. The population is 401.

Saint George, patron of a town freed from Osiglia in 1481

📅 Every year, on 23 April

Bormida celebrates Saint George on 23 April; once united with Osiglia as a single community, it became ecclesiastically independent by building its own parish church in 1481, which today preserves a Madonna attributed to Anton Maria Maragliano.
