Dego

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 2,003 · Postal code: 17058

The name of Dego is said to be a boundary mark. It comes, the etymologists say, from the Provençal dec, border, and before that from the X carved on boundary stones: here, in fact, the territories of three Roman municipia met, Acqui, Alba and Vado.

On 14 and 15 April 1796 the village was a battlefield between Napoleon's army and the Austro-Sardinian troops, one of the episodes that opened the road to Piedmont for the French: it cost the inhabitants about four hundred dead. In March 1814 bad weather stopped pope Pius VII here on his way back from Savona; the canopy under which he was carried is still on show in the town hall. The population is 2,003.

Saint Ambrose, patron of a town with one of the world's five female charterhouses

📅 Every year, on 7 December

Dego celebrates Saint Ambrose on 7 December; his parish church, in the locality of Dego Villa, was rebuilt in 1810 on a pre-existing building, while in the hamlet of Ca' Bulin stands the Charterhouse of the Trinity, founded in 1994 and today one of only five female charterhouses existing in the world.
