Giusvalla

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 460 · Postal code: 17010

Of a whole abbey one stone is left. Legend has it that in the eighth century a Lombard king had the abbey of San Salvatore built here and gave it to the monks of Bobbio; towards the middle of the tenth century the Saracens destroyed it. Today all that survives of it is a bas-relief walled into the balustrade of the parish church: a pelican.

After that destruction the marquis Anselmo, son of Aleramo, raised the abbey of San Quintino at Spigno to protect the pilgrims on the road between Savona and Acqui. Between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries many left Giusvalla for South America, and above all for Montevideo. The population is 460.
