Feast of San Fermo
📅 Every year, on 8 August
On 8 August Merana, a municipality of 185 inhabitants in the province of Alessandria, celebrates its patron San Fermo.
On the hill of San Fermo, above the village and the Bormida valley of Spigno, stands a watchtower of Langa stone twenty-five metres high. It belonged to a chain of towers strung along the valley and it watched the road that in Roman times was the via Aemilia Scauri, running from Acqui towards the coast near Savona. Beside it survives the square cistern that collected rainwater, roofed with a stone barrel vault. The marquises of Ponzone and the Del Carretto held it, and the town's coat of arms keeps the memory: a double-headed eagle, five red bends and a golden tower.
The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta was opened in 1941, replacing an older church that stood on the hill beside the tower. A few years earlier Merana had lost its town hall too: in 1928 it was absorbed into Spigno Monferrato, and it recovered its independence only in 1947.
