Near the village there is an earth mushroom some fifteen metres high: the boulder on top acted as a cap and protected the conglomerate beneath from erosion, and that became the stem. A good many legends have grown up around it, and it now stands inside a regional nature park.
Piana Crixia is the northernmost municipality of the province of Savona and the only Ligurian one bordering the province of Asti; indeed, together with Verrua Savoia, it is one of only two Italian municipalities touching three provinces — Cuneo, Asti and Alessandria. The name comes from Crixia, a Roman crossroads on the via Emilia Scauri. The population is 857.
