Murialdo

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 838 · Postal code: 17013

The name is said to be made of two pieces: the Latin mirus, wonderful, and the Germanic wald, wood. In the fifteenth century, though, the wood counted for less than loyalty: in 1445 Murialdo rebuilt its parish church and Calizzano, Genoa's ally, made it pay by sacking the place; five years later the men of the village helped Giovanni Del Carretto take the Finale back.

Underground there was something else: at Riofreddo they dug graphite, at Pastori copper, sulphides, silver and gold. The mines have been still for more than a century. Above it all stands monte Camulera, 1,224 metres. The population is 838.
