Osiglia

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 469 · Postal code: 17010

The lake of Osiglia did not come by itself: it was built between 1937 and 1939 to feed the power station of Cairo Montenotte, and to do it a rural village had to be sacrificed. Every time the reservoir is drained — which happens roughly every ten years — the drowned village comes back into view.

With its thirteen million cubic metres it is the largest freshwater reserve in the province of Savona. At Magione, instead, there is a little church that was a stop for pilgrims and that from 1267 belonged to the Templars, then to the knights of St John: inside are frescoes of 1470. The population is 469.

Feast of the Holy Name of Mary

📅 Every year, on 12 September

On 12 September Osiglia celebrates the Holy Name of Mary; with fewer than 500 residents, it is one of the smallest municipalities in Liguria, overlooking the lake that bears its name.
