Pagazzano

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,082 · Postal code: 24040

For at least six centuries the parish of Pagazzano belonged to the diocese of Pavia, although it was cut off from all the rest of that diocese: an ecclesiastical island in the middle of the Bergamo plain. It already was so in 1217, and perhaps earlier, and it remained so until 1820, when the village passed to the diocese of Bergamo. The name too is uncertain: some derive it from pagus, the ancient village, others from the name of a Roman landowner, Pacatius.

To the east the boundary of the comune is still the Fosso bergamasco, the ditch dug to settle matters between the Duchy of Milan and the Republic of Venice, which stayed in force until 1797 and today is interrupted almost everywhere. Inside that border the Visconti built, between 1450 and 1475, a square brick castle with a wide moat: no embellishment, no turning into a princely residence, only military architecture. To the south, on the border with Caravaggio, lies the Fontanile Brancaleone nature reserve.
