Brignano Gera d'Adda

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,937 · Postal code: 24053

Brignano Gera d'Adda, known simply as Brignano until 1863 and as Brignà in the Bergamo, Milan and Cremona dialects, is a municipality of 5,937 people in the province of Bergamo, Lombardy. It lies on the Bergamo plain, in the area known as Gera d'Adda, between the Adda and Serio rivers. The earliest document attesting to its existence dates from 847.

The Visconti held the town for centuries: its own coat of arms dates the family's presence from 1186, when Frederick Barbarossa granted them the fief, to 1892. Sagramoro Visconti, an illegitimate son of Bernabò Visconti, became lord of Brignano in 1380 and was murdered five years later by his cousin Gian Galeazzo Visconti, then duke of Milan. A descendant, Francesco Bernardino Visconti, was born in the oldest part of the Visconti palace, now the town hall, and some authors have identified him as the Unnamed in Alessandro Manzoni's novel.
