Feast of Saint Leo the Great
📅 Every year, on 10 November
On 10 November Cenate Sopra celebrates its patron Saint Leo the Great, to whom the Chiesa di San Leone in the municipal territory is dedicated.
Cenate Sopra used to be called Casco, and the name appears for the first time in 774 in the Codex Diplomaticus; Cenate arrives in 830, in an inheritance document that reads "Casa sua de Cenate", and Casco survives into the fifteenth century before disappearing altogether. The village, then a single place called Cenate San Martino, was cut in two by the Tadone torrent, with the parish and the main settlement on the other side, where Cenate Sotto is today. What really divided it was Saint Charles Borromeo: in 1575 he established on this side of the torrent a second parish, dedicated to San Leone, and from then on the separation never stopped. The administrative split was ratified in 1611.
In the parish church of San Leone Magno there is an Assumption painted by Giovan Battista Moroni: it was brought here in 1832 from the church of Santa Maria del Misma after several attempted thefts. There are also works by the Fantoni, by Carlo Ceresa and by Francesco Capella. The bell tower, on the other hand, tells of the war: under the decree of 23 April 1942 the three largest bells were taken away to be turned into cannon, and after the war the remaining five were recast as well, to make the set of eight that still rings. Below Monte Misma, at the mouth of the Valpredina, lies the regional reserve managed by the WWF, with its botanical garden.
