Saint George the Martyr, patron of Zandobbio
📅 Every year, on 23 April, with a craft market and music
Zandobbio celebrates Saint George the Martyr on 23 April, with a craft market and music in the historic centre.
The stone of Zandobbio can be recognised in Bergamo. It is a dolomite of a colour between white and pink, quarried here since Roman times, and of it were built the Angelo Mai Library and the Porta San Giacomo, two of the best-known pieces of the upper town. The village's own parish church too, dedicated to San Giorgio and reworked in the eighteenth century by Giovan Battista Caniana, is made of the local marble; the altars were carved by the brothers Andrea and Gian Giacomo Manni around 1725.
At the entrance to the village, on the other hand, there is something nobody looks at any more: the thermal establishment that count Guido Beroa had built and opened at the beginning of the nineteenth century, surrounded by a park of ancient trees. It was closed during the twentieth century and for many years has stood abandoned, a short way from the baths of Trescore, which still work. Beside the cemetery stands the church of San Giorgio in Campis, of the eleventh century, with a bell tower of mullioned windows and frescoes in the Byzantine style. Two thousand seven hundred and twenty inhabitants in the Val Cavallina.
